Energy efficient

Building highly sustainable medical centres is a priority for UHD. By incorporating the very latest ideas and technology, we can substantially reduce the running costs of practices and save GPs considerable sums of money.

The sustainable measures that we incorporate in our buildings are 'built-in' not a 'bolt-on' and our specialist team adopts ISO 14001 environmental management standards.

Our most recent scheme in Oldham has achieved BREEAM Excellent status. BREEAM sets the standard for best practice in sustainable design and has been widely acknowledged as the measure to describe a building's environmental performance.

Sustainable and energy-efficient features include:

  • Heat-recovery fresh air ventilation systems - avoiding the need for air conditioning
  • Solar PV panels generating lower-cost electricity
  • Super-high insulation sealed buildings
  • Internal and external recycling facilities
  • Point-of-use water and room heaters
  • Low-energy lighting
  • Economy flushing WCs and automatic taps
  • Neutral insulation glass and double glazing
  • Ground/air source heat pumps
  • Rainwater harvesting and recycling
  • Under-floor heating

Example benefits from a 25kWp solar PV scheme installed on a medical centre development:

  • A 25kWp system generates around 27% of the medical centre’s overall yearly electricity requirement
  • A cost saving of over £2,500 a year on electricity bills
  • A saving of 24,300kg of CO2 emissions – equivalent to three times round the world in a car

Typical yearly total yield for a 25kWp solar PV scheme:

Annual production approximately 20,150kWh (806 kWh/kWp)

The figures quoted above are based on a yearly average. The data varies year on year, subject to climatic conditions.

All our solar PV schemes combined are helping the planet by a saving of over 220,000kg in CO2 emissions per year – equal to 27.5 times round the world in a car.
